"I'm just being civic-minded," Sam reasoned. "Someone needs to look out for the well-being of these good people as long as Hurricane Max is in town." She continued to mumble to herself as she idly scanned her makeshift security blotter. "A slightly dented network hub is a quick fix anyway. Nothing like the kind of property damage Max can-" she stopped. Why was she talking to herself? "Probably stress." Yes, probably. That towering Mountie was going to be the death of her. Or himself. Probably both. She suddenly wondered if he was aware of how reckless he was being, but couldn't stop for some reason. The thought lingered unhappily in the silence, like an unwelcome guest with no other plans for the day. It rang uncomfortably true for both of them. Sam felt a giddy, sleep-deprived laugh sneaking up on her. Two renegade cops from far-flung stars, working together to uncover a galaxy-spanning conspiracy. What a perfect pair of utter goddamn lunatics they were.
