In Haalhan society, military seniority is determined by the radicalness of one's feather beard. This seems utterly ridiculous to outsiders, but it is actually quite a good system. In Fiah, a specific hormonal response to acute stress causes a temporary acceleration in the rate of plumage growth, whereas increased moulting is one of the symptoms of chronic stress problems. Thus, only a Fiah who is frequently exposed to stressful situations, but is able to maintain an ordered and calm existence in spite of it, can ever grow a mighty feather beard worthy of a leadership position. A grandly bearded Guardian such as Olma is an unflappable bastion of stoicism. That's not why Olma's expression looks like that, though. That's the "wow this recruit is being really frigging rude" expression.
