Hooooly wow they’re big. I mean, I was prepared for that, I remember (vaguely) reading an average size listing on the wiki page (unless I’m remembering wrong) but looking at Ethma in person and realizing that id’s at least a /foot taller/ than two /grown not-wimpy men/? Yeesh. Hoooooly wow, the Fiah are /biiig/. Approaching hradani-size (oh my nerdiness is showing…)
Yeah they’re pretty goddamn big. It’s one thing to see, in writing, “these dudes are tall,” and quite another to actually see said dudes being tall next to comparatively untall humans.
I think my favourite “holy what that guy is huge” moment so far is probably Gorth though. Hlurcht can get crazy monstrous big under the right circumstances.
Sheesh. When they get to the Fiah home world, the humans are gonna need to wear childrens clothes.
Hey, how is ‘Fiah’ pronounced anyways? ‘Fee-ah’ or ‘Fai-ah’?
That’s what I thought. Sounds better like that.
oh on, i have been pronouncing it wrong in my head the entire time.
I thought as much. Fee-ah sounds much better.
I agree. It also aligns well with the idea of a melodic, tonal language; spoken in one of Haalha’s native dialects, the word “Fiah” sounds like a snatch of birdsong, almost a little two-tone trill – Fee-ah!
I thought it was Fai-ah!
Hey, look at that! I was basically spot-on with Ethma’s size when I drew her! Yay me!
When I look at Ethma in panel 4, I think:
simply because she looks like she’s in a spotlight.
Just discovered The End through Hiveworks, and I can’t wait for new updates. :3
Fiah are now my new favorite aliens ever. >w<
Aww, thank you! My favourite aliens are the Hlurcht, but only because I know what’s happening in later events. 😀
As you can tell from my name, I’m a fan of feathers. >.>
This only updates weekly?
We’ll be switching to twice weekly in the near future, but currently have a slowed down schedule because I just had a baby back in August.
The next intermission will be happening mid January, and that’s when we’ll be twice a week again.
…Endi’s a perv. He’s sitting there with Cassie with no clothes on, while Ethma has the decency to actually put on some clothes. XP
Hahaha, meh. Fiah are completely covered in feathers and have no outer reproductive organs. They mostly wear clothing to protect themselves from exposure to the elements, and back on their home planet, when indoors, they wear about half as much clothes as Ethma is wearing or less!
This is just me, but I’m picking up subtle allusions to the metroid series here. I am probably just thinking that the Fiah seem like Chozo in certain aspects (like bird features and telepathy).
Kind of, but it wasn’t really intentional and that they are psychic birds is where the similarities stop, for the most part. We didn’t really think about it until we were a ways into the story, and when we picked up on it it was a ‘oh yeah, those guys’ kind of revelation.
Just finished reading the back log and I do have to say I love this web comic. The depth of your world-building really comes out and the art-style is so unique. I look forward to reading future updates. :3
Thanks! I often worry that all the world-building is mostly for our own benefit and doesn’t show through in the comic all that much, so I really appreciate the complement. We look forward to providing you with future updates to read!
It was a grand momment when I first saw this.
Just a thought… but if the “shells” work by distorting space (i.e. to fit a rather large bird inside a rather small container), wouldn’t they automatically distort sound as well? I mean putting aside the fact that they would probably NEED to distort sound in certain ways to function effectively as a disguise, it would probably happen even if unintended due to the spatial distortion taking place…
… which makes it all the more strange that Ethma seems to be instantly identified by her voice here.
Ethma is using telepathy. Thus, no voice. Note the black speech balloon with no tail.
Victors face in the third panel was priceless XD
