Respect levels have risen, though it was always high since she looks so awesome
“So for the last time, stop breaking the fourth wall! Readers are starting to catch on.”
Most powerful weapon in the history of the universe. The guilt trip.
correction *The mom guilt trip
Patricia, you literally have Ethma at her wits end with you and your Rugrats crew. What more will it take for you to have faith in your Space Mom?
Technically not yet at that level. Wait for the next one. Endi probably has that piece. Ethma is more along the lines of the disappointed father figure atm.
Hmm. Seems sincere. Though she could just be a quick learner. Guilt or not that was amazing and I truly love this page. Keep up the good work, oh and take care of yourselves hehe. Spring is sort of here?
“We only abducted all of you for your own good, after all. Can’t you see by the awesome primer we have on your species that we are so much better at this then when we screwed up the entire Ithian race?”
“And I know you guys will just love the zoo…er, pre-approved planet, we’ve set up for you!”
The secret, Ethma, is knowing how to make a mean guacamole dip.
I endorse this message.
Second Jeff’s comments. As for myself – Endi & Ethma are sincere, if probably a bit gullible and clueless. Perhaps they would be considered aberrant or even radical by the standards of their race?
See, something seems strange here. Why are the Fiah seemingly so poor at inter-species interaction when they are a mature space-faring race already possessing so much first-hand experience with other extraterrestrial races, especially the Ith who are very much like humans? Why does the human primer seem almost *designed* to only provide the minimal amount of information needed for kidnapping, when even a cursory glance at humanity’s history would provide far better information? (I mean, the Ith contingent figured this out pretty quick.) It’s almost as if Ethma and Endi are working on a very limited “need to know” basis, and don’t even realize it.
What is it that we readers are missing here?
You might be overlooking the fact that the humans were apparently supposed to be in cryostasis until they were brought to their new home. So I assume that on most Exodus missions the species being transplanted doesn’t have much direct interaction with the Fiah individuals.
Also if you go back and check the bios pages for Ethma and Endi (last two intermission pages before the start of chapter 6) you’ll note that Endi is the one with any sort of Diplomat training, while Ethma’s skills seem primarily suited for combat and/or exploration. Or in human terms, perhaps she’s just not a people-person?
Even if we assume the humans all ended up in cryo, it still doesn’t explain the Fiah’s apparent lack of diplomatic skill regarding interspecies interaction. I mean, the humans would have to come out of cryo at *some* point and be interacted with. As for the primer, again – the humans have to come out of cryo at *some* point – so why is it so devoid of information that the Fiah are having problems even with basic foodstuffs? Ethma and Endi are the only Fiah we’ve met so far – so either the Fiah are amazingly oblivious and incompetent regarding interspecies relations, or Ethma and Endi are very much out of the loop on what is actually going on.
It would explain it if they weren’t the Fiah meant to get humans situated to their new habitat. They seem to specialize in different skill sets, and what if the ones that got exploded to death behind the Earth’s moon were the Fiah that were best suited for interspecies relations establishement? We can’t rule that out either.
…Or perhaps Ethma has done enough studying to learn how to lie?
i feel sorry for ethma
I got it! The humans are the evil guys!!!!!
You are only now catching on? o_O
Uh… is… is a hug appropriate in this situation? What’s the Fiah cultural equivalent of a hug?
A wing brush.
It’s… a hug, actually. The Fiah are naturally gregarious and tend towards physical affection, due to their flock-like social dynamics and the need to share shelter on their stormy homeworld.
She fails to understand humanity because she is not working from the standpoint that we are all insane, paranoid, and leery of anything more powerful than ourselves.
Ethma’s final weapon: the space palm.
Ethma has obviously picked up *some* knowledge of human mannerisms, if she knows how to facepalm.
Unless that’s more of a universal trait of sentient species, provided of course the sentient species has a face.
It seems possible to me that, being so similar, much of what they assumed about humans was based off their knowledge of the Ith. Physiologically the two species might be similar, but culturally humans are way different. The Ith follow that whole monoculture, where no one dares speak out against the ruling class, not even in their own homes (or at least that was the vibe I got). Humans on the other hand have a tendancy to buck against authority they don’t like and rebel however they can, even if it’s just by swearing at their leader in the privacy in their own home. Entire countries on Earth allow their citizens to insult or mock their leaders, which would probably never fly in the Ith culture. So perhaps the Fiah were expecting that humans would be more….docile? Compliant? I’m not sure what word I’m looking for here.
Depends on the culture. I make jokes about space Nazis but in world war 2 it was discovered the the German main weakness was a total inability to think for themselves and pathological fear of there own Commanders.
In one battled 2 men took a German Officer Prisoner Prisoner and made him order a Platoon to lay down there weapons and surrender. And it worked.
If it was US forces they would of broke out laughing and shot them.
I’d have laughed if the truth was funny rather than tragic… but most humans are disgustingly quick to kowtow to any perceived authority if it means sloughing off personal responsibility.
The Ith may have a system whereby nobody dares to speak out against the leaders, but humans largely live in society where everyone is too brainwashed to even know what is going on. Nobody craves freedom because the people are told they already have it. Even in a shithole like this, people are more than willing to believe that everything is fine because they are continually bombarded with misinformation.
Heck, there is a freakin advert to the left of where I’m typing this flashing the words “CRAZY SALE!” and “SAVE MONEY” at me and some picture of a woman with an absurd facial expression. I can read at least four forms of attempted manipulation in that advert alone.
Of course we don’t understand. Why? Because since leaving home we’ve never ran into anyone willing to go to such lengths to guarantee our safety.
I always love the alt text XD I feel like it’s half the reason I follow the comic. And also the awesome art, story-line, characters, and its amazing comedy moments.
Yeah, but you have to understand, to do that, they might to have to accept the notion that they were wrong and might not have been being right, and really, that’s just a lot to ask.
Cultural differences to the extreme.
