The warning klaxon howled like a lost soul cast into the fires of Hell. Max grimaced and took a bracing sip from his flask. "What the hell is that noise?" he growled, meeting the baleful red glow of a nearby emergency light with an accusatory glare of his own. Sam looked unconcerned. "It means we're being approached by other ships. I wouldn't worry. There's no way pirates would attack us this close to the station - they'd be torn to pieces by the interceptor patrols as soon as they opened fire." Max thought that over for a moment. "Which means," he concluded grimly, "that a patrol's been sent to intercept US." "Well, yeah," said Sam. "It's standard procedure to scan incoming ships for contraband. This is completely normal. We'll tell them our only cargo is a low-tech land vehicle and a lot of paperwork, and they'll let us through." Max stared at her, then turned and smashed his fist into the communications console on the wall, silencing the hellish warning klaxon and rendering all ship-wide communication and announcement functions permanently inoperable with an expensive-sounding crunch. "If we ever go to your planet," he said, picking bloody bits of shattered console out of his knuckles, "I'm gonna find whoever designed this ship and punch him in the goddamn teeth." For once, Sam was in complete agreement. It WAS kind of a crap ship.
